Project Description

This challenging two stage Design and Build project involved numerous aspects including creating new classrooms, offices, performing arts facilities and communal areas through both refurbishments and new build extensions to existing buildings within Bromsgrove School campus. The main works covered refurbishing an existing auditorium in Routh Hall and the construction equivalent of keyhole surgery to install a new auditorium in the centre of fully operational Cobham Hall. As part of an extensive value engineering process on behalf of the client we reviewed the scope and interrogated every aspect to enable a £2 million saving to meet the client’s budget. Despite working predominantly in a live school environment we were able to accelerate the programme to complete the operational areas earlier for the 2017 intake, leading to a team of over 160 workers on site. The complexity of the works, plus the considerable number of variations requested during the programme, led to Shaylor Group Project Manager Andy Ryan being awarded a Construction Manager of the Year Finalist place by the CIOB. Due to the success of this project Shaylor Group was awarded the next phase of the works for the conversion of the Webber Building, a £1.8 million refurbishment project.

The school was very fortunate to have Shaylor Group to work with on these projects. Despite having altered the scope of works to both buildings in order to meet our contract sum, the project team still displayed a keen commercial sense throughout the project and looked for every available opportunity to revise the works to lower costs yet still achieve the same results. Their ideas were always excellently considered and this proactive and conscientious approach saved the school considerable sums and actually achieved better results than we’d anticipated. Throughout my career with the school we have had almost constantly ongoing construction works on campus in some form. I have worked with a number of different companies and I can honestly say I have had my best experience by far with Shaylor Group - the quality of the finished buildings and their facilities is outstanding.
